On his having arrived at the age of 23
-
John Milton
Summary :
The Poem “on his having arrived at the age of 23” was
written by John Milton. He was a famous poet of his time. He wrote many poems.
Out of them, the present Poem was considered as a personal meditative sonnet.
It was written in 1632, soon after the completion of his graduation at
Cambridge University.
According to the Poem, The poet considered time as a subtle
thief which stole his young days away from him. He compared with that of a bird
and mentioned that it had taken away his 23 years of age without any perfect
mental maturity. He stated that his youth was like a spring season which had no
bud or blossom to show. The poet unhappily stated at the end of the octave that
his Physical appearance did not match with his mental maturity levels properly
and so he complained unhappily that God had blessed some people in the society
by granting both the semblance and inward ripeness in an even manner.
In the last six lines of the poem, The Poet agreed
that god would give hi whatever he had wished for; if at all God’s eye would be
upon him in a graceful manner. He gave the clarification that, if god desired
the he would receive mental maturity levels in a perfect manner. So, he stopped
complaining about others and started focussing on his works sincerely.
The Present Poem is also called an Italian sonnet. Italian
sonnet has Octave and Sestet. Octave consists of 8 lines. Within octave, Poet
poses questions and the answers to those questions are given in the sestet. That
means in the last six lines of the poem. The rhyme scheme of the Poem is ABBA
ABBA CDE DCE. The entire poem is based on the theme called crisis of faith.
Within the poem, the poet journeyed from doubts and discovered himself in a
true full manner as far as his inward ripeness is concerned.
